Dear Parents/Guardians,

A hearty welcome to all new, and returning families to Bernice Childs Elementary School where we believe that Every Child Deserves a Champion!  As a result of having a challenging couple of years, it was exciting to have our scholars back in the building this past school year. The resilient spirit of our scholars showed that they were ready and eager to learn and the entire staff and I were just as excited to see each scholar walk through those doors.

Our focus for this school year is to simply go “Back to the Basics” to re-engage and re-establish our scholars, our school, our staff, and our community.

On this journey, we will focus on several things, beginning with our scholars’ attendance.
Simply put, when scholars are not in school, they don’t/can’t learn. It has been proven that attendance is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. We will also focus on scholars becoming better writers. The process of
writing improves a student’s ability to recall, process information in new ways, and make connections between different concepts. Writing isn’t just a tool to assess learning, it also promotes it. Another goal on this journey is having SEL-focused classrooms. Classrooms that have a social and emotional learning (SEL) focus helps to build a foundation for a positive, inclusive culture which will include empathy, processing emotions, understanding and resolving conflicts, and building positive relationships.

Also, it is imperative that on this road of getting back to the basics that we include “you” our parents.  Parent Involvement is needed.  When schools and parents share responsibilities for improving academic achievement, scholars are more successful. With this partnership, the school is responsible for providing a high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment. While parents' support their children's learning by monitoring attendance, homework completion, and participating as appropriate in decisions pertaining to their children's education. With your help and proven best practices, these goals will ensure the success of us all.

Finally, the CDC still recognizes COVID-19 as a disease that can still be transmitted. As a result, we will continue to be diligent in promoting handwashing, use of hand sanitizer, and refraining from hugging or unnecessary body contact/close contact. In addition, to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment, we will continue with the daily symptom screening which MUST be completed EACH DAY PRIOR to your child arriving to school.  Scan the QR code and it will take you directly to the Childs School Daily Health Certification form.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call or email me. I look forward to working with you to create a positive, healthy, and successful school year of learning.

Your Partner in Education,

Mrs. Tarita Lowery
